:: Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) ::
Introduction
Kongunadu Arts and Science College became autonomous in the academic year 2004-05 and continues to be affiliated to the Bharathiar University. The College is now free to frame its own curriculum and to adopt innovative methods of teaching and evaluation. To cope with the pace of development in the field of higher education, the College is introducing the Choice Based Credit System from the academic year 2005-06.
Objectives of the Choice Based Credit System
- to enhance the curriculum to facilitate job opportunities.
- to impart those skills that are required for an entrepreneur.
- to provide the students with a greater flexibility in their choice of courses.
- to enable the students to have their own choice of courses at the basic/advanced
level, according to their needs, aspirations and learning capacity.
- to provide opportunities to the students to earn extra credits within the stipulated time.
Components of the UG curriculum
Under CBCS, the UG curriculum comprises 3 parts with 8 components.
- Part I : Language : Tamil / Malayalam / Hindi / French / Sanskrit
- Part II : Language : English
- Part III-A Major Components:
Core Courses, Inter-Departmental Courses
and Extra-Departmental Courses:
- Part III-B Other Components:
- Value-Based Courses (Moral and Ethics, Environmental Studies and
General Awareness)
- Job-Oriented Courses (JOC)
- Co-curricular Activities
Components of the PG curriculum
Under CBCS, the PG curriculum comprises 2 parts with 5 components.
- Part I-A Major Components: Core Courses, Inter-Departmental Courses
and Extra-Departmental Courses.
- Part I-B Other Components:It comprises both Compulsory and Optional Courses.

The Credit System (UG)
Each course of a Programme is assigned with points of credit, based on the contact hours, quantum of the subject matter and complexity of the content.
UG Programmes
After the successful completion of all the prescribed courses of a UG Programme, the marks obtained in each course will be graded and the grades of all courses will be converted into Grade Point Average (GPA) mathematically. Based on the GPA, the classes will be awarded for Part I, Part II & Part III-A, separately.
To indicate the overall performance of the student, Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) will also be computed by taking into account all the parts together and indicated by letter grades.
PG Programmes
After the successful completion of all the prescribed courses of a PG Programme, the marks obtained in each course will be graded and converted into Grade Point Average (GPA) mathematically. Based on the GPA, the Class will be awarded for Part I-A only.
To indicate the overall performance of the student, Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) will also be computed by taking into account all the parts together and indicated by letter grades.
